Just wanted to dedicate a wee post to my favourite Britpop band: Supergrass. :-)
They split in April this year. I went to the farewell gig in Glasgow which was amazing, yet incredibly sad. I think they were the first proper band I became obsessed with (shhhh, Spice Girls don't count). It wasn't until I was in my teens that I got into them, but I was enamoured with the video for "Alright" when it first came out. Think I was only six at the time. But I now appreciate the broad scope of their music. I was ecstatic when "Tales of Endurance" made it into the set at the farewell gig.
I also went to see Gaz and Danny's side project, The Hot Rats, around this time last year at a venue called King Tut's Wah-Wah Hut, which is quite an important venue in terms of Britpop. It's apparently where Oasis was discovered, and a lot of '90s Britpop bands made their Scottish debut there. Fantastic place. Anyway, that gig was especially good because I got to meet the guys afterwards. They're so lovely and down-to-earth! I got some vinyl signed, said something like "hiireallyenjoyedthegigtonightthanksssssssss!" and then ran away. OK, I'm crap at talking to people anyway, but it was so nice to see them interacting with the fans.
There was an interesting little update on the Supergrass Facebook page the other day:
Gaz is currently working on his first solo album.
Mainly recorded at his studio in Oxford, he & Producer Sam Williams are at the latter stages of the record, which is due for release next year.
Gaz's new website will be up & running within the next month & will have all the info, including sneak peeks of new material, photos & more !!
Mick, the bassist, has his own band called db Band. They haven't released anything yet, but the tracks on the website sound mighty groovy. They were busy touring France the other month. Hopefully they will tour in the UK soon.
Not sure what Danny's up to. Last I heard, he was drumming for Babyshambles.
Rob's in hiding, probably.
And Charly Coombes, who wasn't officially a member of the band, but often played second guitar with them in live, has his own band: Charly Coombes & The New Breed. Add them on Facebook if you can.. if you drop them a message, they're likely to respond. I hate using Facebook, but it's good for interacting with lesser known bands.
And, to finish off, a couple of videos for you. The first one is Gaz being interviewed by Simon Amstell. Too cute.
The second one is a beautiful little track called "Eon", from their eponymous 1999 album. Enjoy!

Date: 2010-11-05 04:32 pm (UTC)The eponymous album and the fifth album, Road to Rouen are more experimental, and in some places quite subdued, but worth listening to nonetheless. The track I mentioned in the post, “Tales of Endurance”, is wonderful.. I love songs that gradually build up like that.
I think the last album, Diamond Hoo Ha is my least favourite. But it has its moments. The second single, “Bad Blood”, has a terrific and underrated video. “Whisky and Green Tea” has some mad lyrics and crazy saxophone solos.. thoroughly enjoyable stuff! :-)
